Kestrel Midland Area Championship The Kestrel Midland Area Championship were held at Lakeside S.C. Peterborough. Racing started on the Saturday with a light westerly breeze. Race One – saw 1558 helmed by John Ellingham over the line, giving 668 helmed by Liam Pike a clear lead which he held throughout the race. At the 3rd mark the middle of the fleet were having their own fun, with much shouting of up!! Up!! Water!! and ‘you can not do that!!’ 3 boats ended up in a tangle, hitting the mark and each other, resulting in turns being required by all 3 boats. Mean while 1558 managed to pull back through the fleet to come 2nd 668 kept 1st place and 1551 helmed by Mike Smith came in 3rd. Race Two – was still in light airs and again won by 668 with 1558 in close attendance throughout the race. 909 helmed by Steve Worf came in 3rd. Race Three – after a short break and a slightly stronger breeze 909 had a strong lead from the start until the last lap when the wind started to fade and they were overtaken by 1558 who came in 1st then 668 caught up and over took 909 (with much chuntering and mumbling coming from 909’s crew) putting them in 2nd place and 909 in 3rd. In the evening with the weather following it’s summer pattern the usual BBQ was fading fast, until Lisa and John offered not only their partially covered back garden and own gas BBQ but transport by Lisa and Liam to get there hence (after 2 empty gas bottles, the 3rd actually having gas in it) no food had to be taken home again. We all had a lovely evening, in great surroundings and the alcohol intake could be maintained – maybe we could arrange the weather next year. Oh and John those 2 fish would definitely look better in Lin’s very large frying pan. We awoke on Sunday to a southerly force 4 gusting to force 5. Race Four – with a longer course set the length of the lake, the three lead boats were regularly changing places but 1558 was the first boat home only to retire when he realized he had missed the start finish gate on the third lap, giving 1st place to 668 and 2nd place to 909. The remainder of the fleet retiring in the gusty conditions Race Five – with a smaller number of boats starting and the gusty winds
increasing the lead boats were continually changing, with the final positions
not decided until the last lap this being 668 1st, 1558 2nd and 909 3rd.
